Proof:
Case 1. If you start with a dollar, lose 10% and then gain 10%, you wind up with 99 cents, because the initial loss was 10 cents, but the later gain was only 9 cents.
Case 2. If you start with a dollar, gain 10% and then lose 10%, you wind up with 99 cents, because the initial gain was 10 cents, but the later loss was 11 cents.
Thus, in the stock market, you take the elevator down, but the stairs up, regardless which happens first.
