accommodation versus modification

These two terms are sometimes confused, but are different things. Within an academic context, accommodation means making the environment more friendly for the student, such as in special education, whereas modification means not expecting the student to learn all of the traditional content of a course (the course thus having been ‘modified’ for the student, and such a student being colloquially referred to as a ‘modified’ student – so ‘modified’ means not held accountable for the entire curriculum.)
