In the beginning, procedures are more important than concepts. This is because the relative importance of procedures and concepts is given by the splitter function. That is, if x is the amount of progress in the subject, then the fraction of attention that should be given to procedures is r(x)/x, and the fraction of attention that should be given to concepts is the remaining fraction, that is, 1 – r(x)/x. (This is why religion has such a strong hold on the hoi polloi – because it is only nominally about concepts, but actually about procedures. This is also the basis of Hans Kelsen’s remark about ideology not being embarrassed by inconsistencies.)

Quadratic equations involves much more material than linear equations. Linear equations is to quadratic equations as a plane going forward on the runway is to the plane whose wheels have just left the ground. Another comparison is that linear equations is to quadratic equations as a river is to the ocean.
