the invitational ‘quick’: ‘quick’ is often used invitationally, that is, to justify the demand about to be made upon your attention. ‘now’ is used in a similar way, but with lower intensity, that is, introductorily, in writing, as in these two examples from the poetry of A. E. Housman: “Now, when the flame they watch not towers about the soil they trod” and “Now, of my threescore years and ten”.
