There is no single word for something that is in the gaseous state. (The expression ‘in the gaseous state is NOT synonymous with ‘being a gas’.) The two possible things in the gaseous state are a vapor and a gas (and there is an important difference between them: a vapor can be compressed back into a liquid, but a gas cannot be.) So, to reference something that might be either a vapor or a gas, we have to say that it is something ‘in the gaseous state’.
