There is a natural tendency to try to substitute procedure for process. It’s hard for the recipients of this ruse to defend against it, but its telltale effect is boredom. Wodehouse’s “Treatment is everything.” is an emphatic acknowledgement that process needs to have priority over procedure, and the nub of Paul Graham’s essay “THE LESSON TO UNLEARN” is that of substituting the procedure of testing for the process of learning.
