bound variables versus free variables

In spite of the distinction between the two types of variables, it is a common practice to conflate them, for the sake of convenience. For example, in Wikipedia’s article on arithmetic progressions, the variable ‘n’ is used both as a bound variable, for defining the sequence, and as a free variable, for specifying the number of terms to be summed.
