fall of an icon

I see that the shoot-from-the-hip icon of the eye has bitten the dust. A check box for ‘show password’ is now used (in gmail), and for good reason: the unslashed eye meant ‘show’ in some venues, and ‘don’t show’ in others. It was obviously intended as another celebration of the graphical interface, but couldn’t make the grade. Running it up the flagpole cost users a lot of frustration, and now it has been silently retired.
