The use of what will later prove to be a synonym enables the teacher to avoid forward reference. For example, it is desirable to have the student get up to speed on the notion of two nonvertical lines being related in such a way that the product of their slopes is -1. Without a separate handle for this notion, the student will have to be distracted by the for-the-moment-irrelevant fact that such lines are perpendicular.
