This is why extraterrestrials are are so hard to come by – considering the cosmos as one giant ‘publication’ (authored by God, or by Nature) – only an infinitesimal portion of it will directly support life. (This doesn’t mean that the rest of the universe is ‘wasted’ – it will be needed later, as life develops and expands, for scaffolding – for example, a star whose energy is used to power a Jupiter-sized orbiting computer dedicated to simulating the human kidney.)
